When it comes to kitchen pantry organisation, there are two types of people. Those who have a Pinterest-worthy pantry and those who struggle to find the ingredients they need when cooking dinner.

It’s safe to say, those in the second category could use a few tips to help sort their pantry, free up space and make them feel calm in their kitchen again. Who’s with us?

Remove all items from your pantry

Start by removing all items from within your pantry. We know, it may seem like a lot of work, but you will be full of gratitude in the end when you no longer have to go digging for a single spice or packet of pasta.

As you remove each item, check the expiry date and dispose of any items that are no longer edible. The same applies to any items that you know your family will not eat – there is no point holding onto them if they’re just wasting space and set to be out of date soon. Donate these to friends or family.

Use containers to sort and store

Now that you have removed all items from within your pantry – stand back and look at the space you have available and what needs to be stored. Our favourite tip is to use containers to sort and store items within your pantry. Not only do they look fantastic, but they allow you to ensure perishable items last longer.

Look for containers in a number of different sizes, as well as containers that can be stacked. This will help you to save space within your pantry and allow you to store similar food types together. Simply fill each container with the desired item and place back into the pantry in a way that works for you and your family.

Label shelves and containers

Once you have placed items back into the panty it’s a good idea to fix labels to your shelves or containers. Both, if you’re feeling extra sorted!

When writing labels on your containers remember to include the expiry date of each item – this can be a large money saver as you will always know when an item needs to be consumed by. If a date is approaching – simply plan your meals around the ingredient to ensure it doesn’t go to waste.

Maintain your pantry daily

Once you have a picture-perfect pantry, get into the habit of maintaining it daily. What this means is ensuring that containers are topped up after each grocery shop or delivery.

You may also choose to hang a shopping list within your pantry – this way, when an item is finished you can simply add it to the shopping list for your next grocery trip or delivery. How’s that for organisation?

With these tips your pantry should be a haven for calm clutter-free living.
