Who wants a Christmas without the chaos?

Christmas can be a stressful season for many. It’s easy to get swept into a panic or forget to enjoy the moment.

But this year can be different.

That’s right – we’re here to tell you that a stress free Christmas is possible and easier to accomplish than you may think.

Make a change

If Christmas always drives you crazy, it’s time to make a change in the way you plan, sort and celebrate.

Start by considering what elements of Christmas increase your stress levels the most. Some common stressors include financial strain, family tension, work commitments and high expectations. Once you have identified the key stressors for your festive season you can adjust and make changes to your approach.

Start planning early

A great way to reduce stress and feel merry during the Christmas period is to start planning early. This includes setting a budget before you even begin shopping, planning for meals in advance, and of course, completing your Christmas shopping before department stores are filled with chaos.

A good rule of thumb is to leave yourself at least six to eight weeks to plan for Christmas. This will ensure tasks can be spread out over the festive season, leaving you with time to celebrate and enjoy Christmas festivities with friends and family.

Revisit your expectations

Do you place high expectations on yourself at Christmas? Perhaps it’s buying the biggest and best gifts for your family or ensuring that Christmas dinner is cooked to an inch of perfection – we want to tell you, you’re not alone! But also, that your expectations can actually be a large source of stress.

Revisit any expectations that you have placed on yourself. Christmas is a time to come together with friends and family, to create memories, and have fun! Taking some time to remember this can assist when high expectations start to intrude.

Remove high stress traditions

When it comes to Christmas celebrations there are many different kinds – from laidback and effortless, to high stress, such as attending Christmas carols each year when your children would rather be out visiting their friends.

Instead of insisting that your family follow high stress traditions, consider opting for a more laid back approach by including family movie nights, baking cookies, or icing gingerbread men, to name a few. The newfound sense of calm will be worth it alone!
