Pantry Organisation for Busy People (That’s you!)
An organised pantry can be an absolute blessing for busy people! From knowing what food items you’re running low on, to being able to direct your kids to healthy snacks, and keeping food fresh longer, it’s well worth the time and effort it takes to get sorted.
Are you ready?
Step 1 – Remove everything
The easiest (and best way!) to organise your pantry is to start by removing everything – we recommend using this step to check the best before dates on each item also. Anything that is expired should be tossed out and any food that you know will never be eaten should also be placed aside to donate to charity or pass on to friends and family.
Step 2 – Assess your storage solutions
The next step should always involve assessing your current storage solutions and what you could use to make your panty function better.
Do you own a selection of plastic containers? Do you have cannisters for perishable items? Could you utilise drawers in your pantry to separate snacks?
The best way to answer these questions is to consider how your family use the pantry. For example, if you snack a lot, it would be worth using stackable drawers to keep pre-packaged snacks handy.
And if your family loves cereal you can’t go past plastic containers for keeping it fresh and crunchy!
Step 3 – Let’s shop!
Once you know what storage solutions you require it is time to shop! Australian retailers such as Kmart, Target and Big W are great for finding affordable containers and stackable drawers for inside the pantry.
You should also remember to buy some labels whilst you’re out! You’ll need these for step 5.
Step 4 – Sort by food type
Now the fun really begins! We recommend sorting and storing your food by type. For example, if you have numerous kinds of cereal or pasta, store them all together. The same goes for canned goods. Not only will it make it easier to find what you need when cooking, but it’s also a clever way to keep track of what you need to buy.
Step 5 – Use labels
Finally, use labels on everything possible! These can be stuck directly onto plastic containers or onto shelves. This way your family will never be confused as to where something belongs!
Are you ready to make the most of your pantry? We hope so!
