There is one main motto when trying to extend the life of your clothes: look after them the best you can!
This can be done in a number of ways, and if followed correctly, is sure to keep your clothes smelling fresh and feeling like new.
So just how, can you extend the life of your clothes?
Ensure you store your clothing properly
How you store your clothing plays a big part in how long they last. To e extend the life of your clothing ensure that you are storing them well. Use storage bags/space bags for seasonal clothes that you won’t be needing for a few months’ time.
Additionally, use good quality hangers inside your wardrobe to prevent clothing from slipping off the hanger.
Do you really need to wash that?
How often do you really need to wash your clothes? We’re not talking about underwear or layers worn super close to your body. However, items such as jeans and cardigans generally don’t need to be washed after each wear.
If they are soiled or dirtied than of course they should be put through a washing cycle, otherwise consider extending their wear and wash cycle.
Always wash in cold water
You should never wash in anything except cold water. Not only does it use less electricity, but hot water weakens the fibres of fabrics and fades colours.
Hand wash your delicate items
How often do you throw delicate clothes into the washing machine under the guise of ‘just this one time’? Doing so is probably causing far more damage than you realise.
Get into a routine of always hand washing your delicates, you can even consider hand washing some items you would normally get dry cleaned such as knits or slacks.
Don’t know how to hand wash? It’s simple really.
Fill a bucked with cold water and a dash of washing powder. Put the clothes you need to wash inside the bucket and swish them around (do not rub clothes together – this can ruin fabrics and colours). Leave it soak for 15-20 minutes and rinse thoroughly with cold water.
Items that are hand washed should then be left to air dry.
If possible, skip the dryer cycle
It’s tempting to move clothing straight from the washer into the dryer for convenience reasons. However, doing do could be damaging your clothing and reducing their life.
Air drying your clothing outside allows the bacteria killing properties in sunshine to reach your clothes, leaving them super fresh!
